The incidence of acute menopausal symptoms and long-term post-menopausal
disorders (osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease) is far greater in
women in North America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Western
Europe compared to women in Asian, Central American and Mediterranean
countries. Scientific research has found that the reason for this is due
to differences in diet, and specifically in the low intake of isoflavone
phytoestrogens in the Western diet.
Falling estrogen levels during menopause bring physical changes
requiring lifestyle adjustments that can be debilitating for some women.
With increasing age and declining estrogen production, isoflavones
become increasingly important, taking over the role of the body’s
estrogen. This is where the unique combination of isoflavones in
Promensil's Menopause is intended to help. Promensil's Menopause assists
women by the supplementation of isoflavones to help manage the symptoms
of menopause naturally.
What is Menopause? - Every woman will experience menopause in her own unique way. For some
women, menopause will be a gradual phase that is hardly noticed. For
others it can be marked with severe symptoms that make going about your
daily life close to unbearable.
Menopause literally means the last monthly period of a woman's life.
However, it is confirmed when a woman has not had a menstrual period for
12 consecutive months. The gradual decrease in the ovaries production of
estrogen during this time is simply the body's natural evolution from
the fertile child-bearing years to a whole new stage of life.
For most women, menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 to 55
years.
Peri-menopause - Natural midlife changes have begun when your periods become irregular.
Peri-menopause refers to the time leading up to menopause when the cycle
length and menstrual flow can vary significantly. You may skip a period
or your flow may become heavier or lighter. A common symptom is the
commencement of hot flashes, which many women describe as a sudden rush
of heat that spreads over the upper part of the body and face making the
skin flush and causing a sudden burst of perspiration. The onset of hot
flashes can often cause embarrassment for women as they can occur at
anytime without warning. Night sweats and mood swings are also common
during this time and you may find that your sleep patterns change.
Estrogen levels play an important role in a woman's life. They rise at
puberty with the onset of childbearing years and then increase and
decrease rhythmically with your menstrual cycle. They peak during
pregnancy and then decline as you reach menopause and your menstrual
cycle ceases.
This decline in estrogen levels during menopause gives rise to common
symptoms such as:
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
- Mood swings and irritability
Other symptoms associated with menopause include:
- Reduced libido
- Insomnia
- Headaches
- Urinary frequency
- Dry vagina
- Inability to concentrate
If you are currently going through menopause, chances are you are
accustomed to more than one of these symptoms. Perhaps it's the intense
hot flash when you want it the least, or it's the on again, off again
tug of war with the blankets at night as you experience night sweats.
The fact is thousands of women begin menopause everyday, so you are not
alone.
Many women are also unaware that decreasing estrogen levels can also
have a less obvious but more harmful effect on your bone and heart
health.
Post Menopause - For most post-menopausal women, the visible symptoms of menopause such
as hot flashes and night sweats will ease. However, there are the
invisible effects of menopause which remain. Both cholesterol, bone and
heart health are major long term health issues for women after
menopause.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Promensil do?
- Reduce number of hot flashes
- Promote feeling of well being
- Promote bone health
- Promote heart health
- Promote general well-being
What's in Promensil? - Each tablet of Promensil is standardized to contain a total of 40 mg of
four standardized isoflavones, genistein, daidzein, formononetin and
biochanin sourced from red clover (Trifolium pratense). The biologically
active ingredients are naturally occurring plant compounds, which are
NOT chemically synthesized.
Promensil is free from sugar, yeast, milk derivatives, wheat and corn
starch, gluten, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors.
How does Promensil work? - Isoflavones are phytoestrogens, which literally means, plant estrogens.
Isoflavones are similar in chemical structure to the body's own
estrogen, and when consumed in adequate amounts they are able to mimic
some of the effects of estrogen to assist with maintaining health and
well being. Isoflavones however are weaker than our natural estrogen,
and are selective in their action in the body. Isoflavones supplement
the needs of women over 45 when levels of hormones are declining.
When will I see a difference? - While this can vary with the individual, most women notice relief from
symptoms within 2-5 weeks. The response may vary with the individual. If
you have had absolutely no change in your well being after six weeks
then you should contact your doctor or call Natrol, Inc., as they may be
able to suggest ways to improve the efficacy of Promensil for you.
How to take Promensil - One Promensil tablet per day is sufficient for most women to help manage
the symptoms of menopause naturally, however 2 tablets per day may be
taken for severe symptoms. To help relieve daytime symptoms, take
Promensil with breakfast. If night time symptoms are worse, take
Promensil with the evening meal.
Antibiotics may disrupt your gut flora and hence reduce the absorption
of Promensil via the gut. Eating yogurt may help to re-establish your
gut flora and improve the absorption of Promensil. H2 antagonists such
as Zantac and Tazac as well as proton pump inhibitors such as Somac,
Zoton and Nexium may also reduce the uptake of Promensil.
If you are currently taking the Oral Contraceptive Pill or Hormone
Therapy, it is recommended that you consult your healthcare professional
before taking any dietary supplement.
Clinical trials - Clinical trials have been conducted throughout the world to demonstrate
the benefits of Promensil for the alleviation of menopausal symptoms
including hot flashes and feeling of well being. Even more global
research is underway to further expand upon their knowledge of
isoflavones and health1-5. Promensil trials have been published in
scientific and medical journals. All studies were conducted by
specialists in universities, clinics and teaching hospitals under Good
Clinical Research Practice guidelines. Natrol, Inc. is the exclusive
manufacturer and distributor of Promensil products in the U.S.A.
Can I change from HRT to Promensil? - To date, all of the clinical trials with Promensil in post-menopausal
women required that no HRT was taken in recent months. In practice, it
is anticipated that some time will be needed to allow the body to adjust
to the change from synthetic hormones to the natural isoflavone
approach. The following suggestions should be discussed with your doctor
before any changeover is contemplated:
- Take both HRT and Promensil (one tablet daily) together for a period of
time, before gradually reducing the dose of HRT.
- Stop HRT and start Promensil twice daily (or until menopause symptoms
are managed), then 1 tablet thereafter.
- Stop HRT and start Promensil one tablet daily. However, there may be
significant menopause symptoms associated with an abrupt changeover
until the patient adjusts.
Can I use Promensil if I'm still getting regular monthly periods? -
Yes. Women can take Promensil while they are still menstruating, in the
time leading up to menopause. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
however should not take Promensil without first consulting a doctor.
What is the difference between red clover products and between red
clover and soy isoflavones? - Not all red clover products are the same. The leaves of the plant
contain the highest amount of isoflavones. Red clover blossoms contain
little or no isoflavones so products such as red clover tea will not
provide any measurable isoflavone levels.
Red clover and soy are both legumes and belong to the same family of
plants. The main difference is that red clover contains four active
isoflavones whereas soy only has two. The extra two found in red clover
are commonly found in other legumes such as chick peas and lentils.

A WORD FROM NUTRITION JUNGLE:
Real Health Laboratories Promensil is a new double strength, one
a day offering. Promensil is a unique red clover extract,
primarily used to reduce and possibly eliminate hot flashes in
menopausal woman. Because the red clover is standardized, it has an
isoflavone content, that belongs in the phytonutrient category of herbs
and plants. These isoflavones have a similar action to estrogen. They
can occupy the estrogen receptor sites in the body (uterus and breast)
and cast the bad estrogens back into the body to be metabolized and
excreted. So this not only helps with hot flashes, but can reduce breast
tenderness during pms, fight osteoporosis and may even help to enlarge
breast tissue! |
